Boston on a Budget with Kids

Free and Low-Cost Activities That Toddlers (and Parents) Love

Boston is one of my favorite big cities to explore with little kids. I’ve been there a couple of times with my son and have absolutely loved it every time. It’s walkable, has great food and there’s so much to do. But, between museum tickets, snacks, parking and more, visiting Boston on a budget can be easier said than done.

That’s why I’ve put together my recommendations for free or low-cost budget-friendly toddler activities, dining, and overall money-saving tips in Boston so you don’t break the bank on your next visit. Check it out below!

Boston on a Budget: Cost-Saving Tips for Parents

  • When to visit: December to March is likely cheapest time to visit Boston since the weather will be cold. You may find the best hotel rates during this time, but would miss out on outdoor activities that you could only do when the weather is warmer. Shoulder seasons (April-May and October-November) are good options if your dates are flexible. You should be able to find reasonable hotel rates and the weather will be warm enough to enjoy days outside.
  • Getting around: Boston is a VERY walkable city. If you don’t plan to travel outside of the city, do not get a rental car. Even if you do need to travel outside of the city, check public transportation options. The train system is great in Boston and you can travel to surrounding cities via rail very inexpensively and efficiently.
  • Free city events: Research before you travel to see if there are any parades, outdoor movies or festivals happening during your stay.
