Grand Cayman Packing List for Families

What to pack for your beach vacation with kids (and what you can skip)

I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite things to do before a trip is go shopping. Between swimsuits, snacks, sun protection, and all the just in case items, figuring out what to pack for Grand Cayman with kids can be overwhelming. The good news? Packing for Grand Cayman is easier than many Caribbean destinations because you don’t need to bring everything from home. This comprehensive Grand Cayman packing list for families breaks down exactly what to bring to Grand Cayman with toddlers and older children, plus what you can skip to save suitcase space.

What should you pack for a Grand Cayman family vacation?

The essentials for any Grand Cayman beach vacation packing list include lightweight clothing, reef-safe sunscreen, beach gear and comfort items for your children. When packing for Grand Cayman with toddlers, prioritize sun protection, flotation devices and their fave snacks.

Because Grand Cayman has excellent grocery stores, pharmacies and shopping, you can find most items you’d bring from home once you arrive. The main trade-off is convenience vs. cost. Bringing essentials from home saves money, while buying on arrival saves suitcase space. This Caribbean packing list helps you decide which items are worth packing.

What clothes to pack for Grand Cayman: Family edition

When deciding what to wear in Grand Cayman, remember that temperatures are consistently warm year-round (75-90°F) so make sure to bring lightweight, breathable options for the whole family.

Best clothing for a Grand Cayman beach vacation

  • Lightweight, breathable outfits: I’m almost always in casual clothing when we visit Grand Cayman. Sundresses are basically my uniform while we’re there, and my husband is almost always wearing shorts and a tee shirt.
  • Swimwear + coverups: We spend a ton of time at the beach and pool when we’re in Grand Cayman. I bring multiple swimsuits and options for coverups in case we want to walk along the beach to a restaurant.
  • Casual evening outfits: Most of our dinners are pretty casual since we have a 4-year-old. Even if we go to a nicer restaurant, you don’t need to dress too formal. My sundresses come in handy again for dinners, and my husband typically wears shorts with a polo or button down.
  • Comfortable sandals and walking shoes: I usually wear athletic shoes on the plane so they don’t take up too much space in my luggage. While we’re in Grand Cayman we all almost exclusively wear sandals and flip flops. Buy a comfortable pair for activities where you’ll be walking more.

For Kids

When packing for a kids’ Grand Cayman vacation, focus on sun protection and quick-dry materials.

  • Swimsuits (2–3 per child): Since we spend so much time at the beach and pool, I bring multiple swimsuits for my son. There’s nothing worse than putting on a damp suit!
  • Rash guards and sun hats: Essential items for any beach packing list with toddlers. The sun in Grand Cayman is REALLY strong, so UV-protection clothing is crucial.
  • Lightweight pajamas: Lightweight jammies are great after a beach day when our bodies are all a little warm!
  • Easy-on shoes or water shoes: I bring easy-on sandals for my son to wear (athletic shoes always get too sandy). And consider getting a pair of water shoes for younger kids to help with stability walking into the Caribbean Sea.

What You Can Skip

  • Heavy jackets: Even if we leave when it’s cold, I leave heavy jackets in the car at the airport. They’re way too bulky!
  • Formal outfits: Even at nicer restaurants, you don’t need to dress too formal. A nice sundress for women and shorts and a polo or button down for men is perfect. And then mini versions of those two for kiddos.
  • Too many shoes: I get it. It’s tempting to bring lots of cute shoes! Whenever I do this, I consistently wear the exact same one or two pairs the entire trip.

Beach & pool essentials for a Grand Cayman family vacation

Your Grand Cayman beach packing list should focus on sun safety and water gear. Before you pack, check with your hotel or vacation rental about what beach equipment they provide. Most of them will offer towels, umbrellas and sometimes even toys.

Bring

  • Reef-safe sunscreen: This is non-negotiable for packing for a Caribbean beach vacation. While you can buy sunscreen in Grand Cayman, bringing it from home ensures you get your preferred brand and will save money. Reef-safe formulas protect your family and Grand Cayman’s marine environment.
  • Rash guards: A must-have when packing for Grand Cayman with kids! They provide extra sun protection and mean less worry during sunscreen application.
  • Reusable water bottles: These are part of my overall carry-on packing list so we don’t need to buy water in the airport. They’re also great to have once we arrive.
  • Goggles or floaties (if your kids use them): We use the vest floatation device for our son. I know it takes up a lot of suitcase space, but it’s worth the peace of mind around water.

Nice-to-Have

  • Lightweight beach bag: Even though most hotel rooms and condos are very close to the beach and pools, it’s still nice to have a beach bag to bring essentials. You don’t want to be carrying too much or running to the room too frequently. Alternatively, if you’re planning to visit a grocery store when you arrive, they sell reusable grocery bags for a couple dollars. They also make a great beach bag (and fun, unique souvenir!).
  • Waterproof phone pouch: Kids are unpredictable. It’s nice to have one of these so your phone doesn’t accidentally get wet, or worse, wind up at the bottom of the pool.

What You Can Skip

  • Large beach umbrellas: The hotels and resorts will have these for sun protection. Just make sure if it’s a busy season to get out early to secure a spot!
  • Beach toys: Check with your hotel or rental, as many provide pool and beach toys. And if not, this is one of the items you can buy there if you end up needing it. I’d recommend going to Cost U Less for this (basically Grand Cayman’s version of Costco, without the membership requirement).

Baby & toddler travel essentials: Grand Cayman packing list

Packing for Grand Cayman with a baby or toddler requires some additional planning. Here’s my Grand Cayman baby packing list with everything you need for traveling with little ones.

Bring From Home

  • Favorite snacks: When packing snacks for toddlers, bring enough for travel days and your first day or two. Popular U.S. brands like Goldfish, Annie’s and Cheerios are available at Foster’s and Kirk Market in Grand Cayman.
  • Comfort items: Think of anything that your little one might miss while you’re away, or that will make life easier while out of your normal routines. We normally bring a favorite blanket and stuffed animal.
  • Travel stroller (lightweight, easy to fold): I do normally bring a travel stroller. It helps hold things while we’re in the airport. It’s also nice to have once you’re in Grand Cayman for walking or nap time while you’re out.
  • Baby/toddler carrier: Same here as above with the travel stroller. It’s great to have in the airport (especially if you have a clingy kiddo like I do!). And it’s easy to bring along if you don’t want to bring the stroller somewhere. Here’s a link to my favorite toddler hip carrier.
  • Sound machine: This really helps with bedtime in a new location. It also helps drown out your voice during naptime or if you want to stay up after bedtime. You can also play white noise from a device if you prefer. It just might not be the exact same as at home if you have a particular kiddo (again like me!).
  • Baby monitor/camera: This is especially helpful if you’re staying in a condo with multiple bedrooms and your little ones are sleeping in a different room from you. Even though my son is 4, I still bring this since he’s in a different room. It just helps with peace of mind!
  • Car seat: Essential if you’re renting a car in Grand Cayman. I prefer bringing my own for safety and familiarity. This is a crucial item for any family beach vacation packing list.

Depending on Where You Stay

  • Pack ‘n play: Most hotels and condos will have a crib or pack n’ play available, but if you have your own travel pack n’ play and prefer to bring it, you should!

What You Can Skip

  • Bulky toys: My general rule is only bring the toys that you’re bringing on the plane for your travel day. You’ll spend so much time doing fun things while you’re there, just a few small items is all you’ll need to have.
  • Full-size high chair: Many hotels and condos will have high chairs available too. If you have a baby or small toddler, consider a small portable high chair just for sitting at the beach.
  • Diapers/wipes for the entire trip: I usually bring diapers and wipes for the first few days, and then buy a larger pack when we arrive. These take up so much room in the suitcase, and there are plenty of stores in Grand Cayman that sell the brands that I use at home like Pampers and Huggies.
Here’s links to my favorite baby and toddler travel essentials.

Health, safety & sun protection items: Grand Cayman travel essentials

When packing for a tropical vacation with kids, health and safety items are non-negotiable. Here are the Grand Cayman travel essentials for keeping your family safe and comfortable.

  • After-sun lotion or aloe: The Caribbean sun is intense year-round in Grand Cayman. Aloe gel helps soothe sunburns and cool skin after beach days. This is an essential item for any beach vacation with kids packing list.
  • Basic medications: I always bring some basic meds (like fever reducers) in my carry-on. You definitely can buy these in Grand Cayman if you need them, it’s just more convenient to have them for your travel day in case you need them. I learned this from experience!
  • Bug spray: Especially in the evenings, there can be a lot of mosquitoes. And mosquitoes LOVE my son for some reason. Again, you can buy this in Grand Cayman as well, but it doesn’t take up too much space just to bring from home.
  • Small first-aid kit: I always bring a few band-aids, antibiotic ointment, etc. just in case we need it.

What NOT to pack for Grand Cayman: Items to buy on arrival

Wondering what not to bring to Grand Cayman? These items are readily available on the island and not worth the suitcase space.

  • Diapers and wipes: Foster’s and Kirk Market carry Pampers, Huggies and other major U.S. brands. Bring some for the first few days, then purchase a larger pack for $30-40.
  • Baby food and snacks: Most familiar American and some European brands are available. Gerber, Plum Organics and standard snack brands are well-stocked at grocery stores.
  • Beach toys: Cost U Less (Grand Cayman’s Costco-style store) has inexpensive beach toys, pails and shovels. Most hotels and even condos will have these for free (check before you leave!).
  • Sunscreen (if you run out): It’s available everywhere, thought it will be more expensive than U.S. prices ($20-30 vs. $12-15 at home).
  • Basic toiletries: Shampoo, soap and other toiletries are widely available at grocery stores.

Optional items that make packing for Grand Cayman easier

These aren’t essential, but they make family travel to Grand Cayman significantly more convenient.

  • Packing cubes: I always use packing cubes when we travel, just to make unpacking when we arrive easier!
  • Wet bags: This is especially helpful if you have an afternoon departure home and plan to swim or hit the beach on your final morning.
  • Travel sized laundry detergent: Most condos have a laundry option available, so I always bring a small sized laundry detergent. You could do the pods or packets too, but you may prefer the small detergent bottle if you have very little kids.
  • Nightlight for unfamiliar rooms: A small plug-in nightlight can help if your kiddos are afraid of the dark or being in an unfamiliar space, especially if they will be sleeping in their own room.
