Planning a trip to Florence, Italy with kids might sound difficult. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the simplest trip, but trust me — it’s totally worth it! Highlights include gelato on every corner, incredible views and being extremely walkable.
Florence is packed with history, art and some great food, so there’s something for the whole family. Keep reading and I’ll share everything you need to know to make the best of Florence with kiddos.
Where to stay in Florence, Italy with kids
Hotel Continentale: Looking for chic vibes without sacrificing kid-friendly amenities?Hotel Continentale nails it. This hotel not only has a modern and comfortable design, but also offers larger rooms and suites perfect for family travel. The location is incredible, directly across from the Ponte Vecchio, but somehow still not too noisy. And if you want a glass of wine while your kiddo takes a stroller nap, the rooftop bar has amazing views of Florence. The staff is incredibly kind and helpful, always a plus when traveling abroad!
Palazzo Branchi: We stayed in a two bedroom/two bathroom unit at Palazzo Branchi. It was amazing to have so much extra space to spread out! Our unit even had a small kitchenette with full size refrigerator where we could store snacks and drinks. Palazzo Branchi is about a five minute walk into the busier part of Florence. So, if you’re looking for a more quiet spot, this is perfect location.
Dining
Caffè Gilli: Caffè Gilli is a gorgeous restaurant right in the heart of Florence. This historic café has been around since 1733 and the menu offers tasty options from espresso to pastries. Maybe the best part for families is that it’s located right in Piazza della Repubblica. This Piazza has a merry-go round and plenty of other activities to watch while you relax.
Ristorante Accademia: Ristorante Accademia is a cozy spot near the Accademia Gallery. It has delicious, hearty Tuscan dishes and a relaxed vibe that’s perfect for families. The staff told us they get the Florence must-eat dish of bistecca alla Fiorentina fresh each afternoon. It did not disappoint! We even stopped here twice, once for dinner and once for a late afternoon glass of wine.
Activities
Accademia Gallery: A trip to Florence, Italy isn’t complete without a trip to the Accademia Gallery where Michelangelo’s David is located. At first blush, this might not seem like the most engaging stop for little kids, but a short and sweet tour works. You can keep moving so little ones don’t get too bored while also getting to see these pieces of art history. Head straight to the David (it’s huge—your little one might actually be impressed), snap pics, and take a quick stroll through the rest of the gallery before anyone gets cranky. Pro tip: Go early to avoid long lines, and bring snacks!
Boboli Gardens: Boboli Gardens is the perfect place to let your toddler burn off some energy while you soak in the beauty of Florence. I honestly think this may be the best little kid-friendly attraction there is in Florence. There are wide-open spaces, gorgeous fountains, and shaded paths. Take a leisurely stroll like we did, or even bring a blanket and snacks to have an impromptu picnic which we saw many people doing as well.
Palazzo Vecchio: Palazzo Vecchio may be better suited for kids who are a little older, but still worth taking a quick tour with little kids. It’s basically a giant castle once owned by the Medici family. Explore the grand halls and rooms once occupied by this famous family, and you’ll learn some pretty interesting history about Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci and the frescoes they painted throughout the building.
