Grand Cayman with Kids: Everything You Need to Plan the Trip from a Family Who Keeps Going Back

The first time I visited Grand Cayman, I was four months old. And I’ve been going back ever since.

My trips were first as a kid with my parents every summer, then as a newlywed with my husband, and now every spring we spend a week on the island with our four-year-old son.

At this point, Grand Cayman isn’t just a vacation destination for us. It’s the nonnegotiable trip we book every year. It’s exactly why I feel qualified to write this comprehensive guide to visiting Grand Cayman with kids!

When is the best time to visit Grand Cayman with kids?

• Spring: This is a busy season for Cayman due to cold temperatures in northern areas and spring breaks for schools. Lodging prices are higher in early spring and rates usually start to decrease in mid-April.
  
• Summer: Hurricane season and hot temperatures can be a deterrent to traveling to Grand Cayman in the summer. If these things don’t bother you, summer could be a great time to visit since it will be less crowded.
  
• Fall: Fall is the quietest season in Cayman, and some restaurants and businesses even close or temporarily limit their hours. If you’re visiting in fall, make sure to check this in advance.
  
• Winter: Winter is the priciest season to travel to Cayman, with holiday travel being very expensive. Cayman’s temperatures are relatively consistent all year, so winter travel is a great escape from the cold if you’re willing to pay the price tag. 

For the best Grand Cayman family vacation, I’d recommend visiting during spring or late winter. Then you’ll find ideal weather and plenty of family activities available. How many days should I plan to spend in Grand Cayman?

I would recommend spending a week in Cayman, and no less than 5 days. Although travel is relatively easy from the US, trust me when I say you will wish you stayed longer if you’re there for any less time. When planning your Grand Cayman trip with kids, 5-7 days gives you enough time to enjoy the beaches, explore top family attractions like Stingray City and the Cayman Turtle Centre, and still have relaxation time.

Planning your Grand Cayman family vacation: Essential tips

Entry requirements and documentation for kids: The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory, so if you’re traveling from the US, you’ll need a passport for each member of the family. You’ll also receive an immigration card and customs declaration card from the flight attendants while you’re on your flight. Read more about Cayman Islands visitor requirements here.

Direct flights and travel time from major US cities: Getting to Grand Cayman is relatively fast and easy from many major US cities. All major US airline carriers (Delta, American, United and Southwest) fly to Grand Cayman. Additionally, Cayman Airways is the national airline of the Cayman Islands and flies direct to Grand Cayman from several major US cities. Depending on where you’re flying from, plan for about a half day of travel. 

Currency, tipping, and budgeting for a family trip: Grand Cayman is a relatively expensive Caribbean island, so budget accordingly. While there are many high-end hotels, condos and restaurants, it’s also very possible to maintain a realistic budget when traveling to Grand Cayman with a little research. Grand Cayman uses the Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD) as their currency, and the conversion is 1 KYD = 1.20 USD. Most businesses accept USD and US credit cards, or you can visit any on-island bank to exchange your money after arrival. In many restaurants, a service charge/tip may be automatically added to your bills, so be sure to check that when you pay to avoid double tipping.

Travel insurance considerations with children: I personally think travel insurance is always a great idea. Before having kids, I traveled differently (more carefree). Since having a kid, I’ve become more risk averse, and have even been burned a couple times when I’ve had to cancel travel plans. For a big, expensive trip, I would always recommend buying travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any unforeseen issues. 

Where to stay in Grand Cayman with kids: Best family-accommodations

• Seven Mile Beach is the best area for families visiting Grand Cayman. This popular tourism area offers the majority of family-friendly hotels in Grand Cayman, excellent restaurants and shopping. Seven Mile Beach with kids is ideal due to its calm, shallow waters and beautiful, sandy shores. Some of the best Grand Cayman family resorts include:

• Grand Cayman vacation rentals for families: When we visit Grand Cayman, we typically choose condo rentals because they offer significant benefits for families with young children. Beachfront condos throughout the island provide full kitchens, laundry and extra space. To us, these are essential amenities when traveling to Grand Cayman with kids! Our favorite condo rental is in the Harbour Heights complex.
  
• East End and other quieter areas for families: While the Seven Mile Beach area is the most popular tourism area, there are other areas of the island that also offer hotels and great rental properties. The East End area is a great option if you want a very quiet vacation and are okay with less options for restaurants and activities. 

Getting around Grand Cayman

• Car rental: There are many car rental options available for pick up at the airport, including all of the big US car rental companies. We always rent a car when we visit because we drive around enough to warrant needing one. If you plan to spend the majority of your time at your resort, you probably don’t need to rent one. 
• Taxis and transportation options: If you don’t rent a car, a taxi is your best option for getting around. There will be plenty of taxis waiting at the airport when you arrive, so there’s no need to reserve one in advance. Ace Taxi is one of the most well-known taxi companies in Grand Cayman. You can save their contact information in advance if it’s helpful to have.
• Driving tips: Because Grand Cayman is an Overseas British Territory, they drive on the left-hand side of the road. If you rent a car, you may get a car with the steering wheel on the right side. Many companies also have imported American cars with the steering wheel on the left. There are a lot of roundabouts, so be prepared for those if you don’t typically drive in them. You should also consider getting an International Driving Permit (you can get them from any AAA location in the US). I’ve never been asked if I have one, but they’re good to have, inexpensive and easy to get just in case. 

Best beaches in Grand Cayman for families with kids

Grand Cayman offers some of the best family beaches in the Caribbean, with calm, clear waters that are perfect for young swimmers. Here are the top beaches for families:

• Seven Mile Beach: The most popular and best beach in Grand Cayman for families, Seven Mile Beach features shallow, calm water that’s perfect for toddlers and young children. This kid-friendly beach is extremely clean, easily walkable and offers both private hotel beaches and public access points.
• Starfish Point: Starfish Point Beach is on the north end of Grand Cayman near Rum Point. It’s a great activity for families, since as the name suggests, the beach and waters are filled with starfish. An important note if visiting: Please don’t remove the starfish from the water. It’s illegal to remove them from the water (even for photos), as repeated removal from the water can kill them. 
• Smith Cove/Barcadere: Located south of the capital city, Georgetown, Smith Cove is a calm beach filled with limestone formations, so offers a great alternative beach to Seven Mile Beach (which is just a white sand beach). It’s a great spot for snorkeling and the calm seas in this area make it great for beginning swimmers.
• Cemetery Beach: Cemetery Beach is located at the far north end of Seven Mile Beach and is another great snorkeling option. Being at the top of Seven Mile Beach, it’s also close to restaurants for a post-beach meal. 
• Beach safety tips with toddlers: The beaches in Grand Cayman are clean and the water is usually calm making it a great activity for families. Use the normal precautions as you would use around water with kids. If the seas are rocky, I’d suggest switching up your plans for a pool day. 

Best things to do in Grand Cayman with kids: Top family activities

Grand Cayman offers incredible family activities that appeal to all ages. From swimming with stingrays to visiting turtle conservation centers, here are the best kid-friendly attractions in Grand Cayman.

• Stingray City/Stingray Sandbar: One of the most well-known attractions in Grand Cayman is Stingray City. It’s a sandbar and snorkeling site in North Sound where you can interact with real stingrays. I promise it’s not as scary as it sounds! You’ll take a boat to the location (takes about 25 minutes). Here is a great option for a charter company you can book in advance. Based on the tour you choose, you’ll likely first stop at a reef-protected dive site where you can snorkel. Then you’ll get back in the boat and head to the sandbar, which is where most of the stingrays are. You’ll have a chance to feed and interact with the stingrays. They are VERY used to humans, so docile and friendly. I would recommend waiting to visit until your kids are older and are strong swimmers. Also, Stingray City is a very popular cruise excursion in Grand Cayman. If you’re staying on island, I’d recommend picking a day when there are fewer ships in port for a less crowded experience. This is one of the most popular things to do in Grand Cayman with older kids (ages 6+).
• Cayman Turtle Centre: The Cayman Turtle Centre is a turtle conservation facility that is helping to restore the overall population of green sea turtles in Grand Cayman and throughout the world. It’s one of the best Grand Cayman activities for toddlers, because they have hands-on animal encounters with turtles and other Caymanian wildlife. At certain points throughout the day, they offer educational programming. Purchase the Turtle Adventure ticket to get access to swimming in the turtle lagoon and a waterslide. • Camana Bay: Camana Bay is in the Seven Mile Beach area and is a must-visit for families with young children because it combines shopping, dining and free splash pads. The shopping ranges from high-end boutiques to books and toys to jewelry and everything in between. There are tons of restaurants, most with great options for kids. We typically spend an afternoon here to grab lunch and go shopping, and return for dinner one night as well. Camana Bay also has two splash pad areas – one with a large fountain and another that is more toddler friendly. Kids are allowed to play and splash in these, so bring a towel! • Bioluminescent Bay tour: If your kids stay up later, the bioluminescent bay tour in the Cayman Kai area is a unique experience. Several companies offer tours where you take a kayak out at night or snorkel and can see the natural light that’s created from underwater plankton. It creates a glowing, sparkling phenomenon! • Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park: The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park is a great option if you want some leisurely time strolling through gardens and protected Cayman habitat. It’s located on the North Side of Grand Cayman and is a captive breeding site for the endangered blue iguana, which is only found in Grand Cayman. 

Essential tips for visiting Grand Cayman with toddlers & young kids

Traveling to Grand Cayman with toddlers requires some special planning. Here are my top tips for making your family trip smooth and enjoyable.

• Sun protection in intense Caribbean sun: No matter what time of year you visit Grand Cayman, the sun will be hot and strong. Make sure you bring plenty of sun screen and sun protection items, especially for kids. Here’s a list of the items we always bring on our beach vacations. Grand Cayman also has many stores where you can buy these items if you run out or forget them, you just may end up spending more once you arrive. 
• Dealing with heat and keeping kids comfortable: If your family isn’t used to the heat, Grand Cayman’s temperatures may be uncomfortable for little kids. While jumping in a pool or the Caribbean Sea are always great options for cooling down, we also typically break up the time we spend outdoors each day. Grabbing an early afternoon lunch is a great way to do this, as well as shopping in Camana Bay. 
• Water safety and flotation devices: My son is not a strong swimmer yet, so we always pack his flotation device from home. Make sure to choose the right device for your child’s age and swimming strength.  
• Nap schedules and managing jet lag: If you’re traveling from the United States, the good news is you shouldn’t have to deal with jet lag and can easily keep your family on its normal schedule. Grand Cayman does not observe Daylight Savings, so is on EST during the fall/winter months and CDT during the spring/summer months. As with any travel, make sure to set your own expectations appropriately around routines. Even without a time change or jet lag, my son takes a day or two to settle into a new routine and location, which can lead to unexpected meltdowns. My advice if this happens is to not let it sour your first few days of vacation. Just know it could be coming and form a plan in advance of how you will handle it!
• Keeping toddlers entertained on beach days: The beach is a great natural playground for kids. If you’re staying in a condo, check in advance to see if your unit comes with beach or pool toys (many do!). If not, purchase some inexpensive sand toys before leaving home and bring them with you. Also there are many stores where you can buy beach or pool toys, just be prepared to spend a little more if you buy them there. 

Best restaurants in Grand Cayman for families with kids

Grand Cayman has excellent family-friendly restaurants that welcome children while still offering quality cuisine. Here are my favorite kid-friendly dining options.

• Kid-friendly restaurants on Seven Mile Beach: The Seven Mile Beach area has a ton of great restaurant options. Many of them, even more high-end ones, offer great options for kids and have a family-friendly atmosphere. Some of our favorites are:
  • Luca: Upscale Italian with great sunset views and extensive wine list. Also has a great Sunday brunch!
  • Casa 43: Incredible Mexican with a great kids menu and the best margarita I’ve ever had. Get there early – it gets busy!
  • Peppers: Casual indoor/outdoor dining. Go on a night with live music!
  • Coccoloba: Beachfront casual dining at the Kimpton Seafire hotel 
  • Bonny Moon: Casual dining, with range of options from seafood to flatbreads; great kids menu and activities
  • Tillie’s: Upscale, in the heart of Seven Mile Beach. Breakfast is best for little kids who are picky eaters.
  • Grand Old House: Waterfront restaurant in Georgetown; go for an early dinner to get great sunset views!
• Casual spots good for picky eaters
  • Coconut Joe’s: Super casual dining in Seven Mile Beach area; great for breakfast!
  • Waterfront Urban Diner: Casual dining in Camana Bay; open for breakfast on the weekends, lunch and dinner all week. On the water, so great spot to watch boats.
  • Tortuga Beach Grill & Bar: Poolside restaurant at The Westin hotel; great, reasonably-priced kids menu!
  • Duke’s: Casual restaurant specializing in seafood and ribs in Seven Mile Beach area
• Grocery stores for stocking condos/meal prep: Since we normally stay in a condo, we go grocery shopping when we arrive. The two main grocery store chains in Grand Cayman are Foster’s and Kirk Market. They both carry many popular US brands, so chances are good you’ll be able to find familiar items, especially great if your kids are picky eaters.
• High chairs and children’s menus: Most restaurants offer high chairs, and most of the casual ones offer kids menus, too. I typically check before we visit to be sure there’s something my son will eat. If not, I will sometimes feed him a meal that I know he’ll eat before we leave the hotel/condo. 

Rainy day activities in Grand Cayman for families

Even in paradise, rain happens. Here are the best indoor activities in Grand Cayman with kids:

• Camana Bay Cinema for family movies
• Shopping at Camana Bay (bring an umbrella!)
• Visit the National Museum in Georgetown
• Enjoy family-friendly restaurants with covered or indoor seating

• Is there healthcare/pharmacy options if kids get sick? Yes! All major grocery stores sell children’s medicine and first aid supplies. I’d still recommend bringing your own for the travel day. Here’s what I pack. And there are plenty of pharmacies and urgent care clinics throughout the island if you need more extensive care. And in case of extreme emergency, there is a hospital in the capital city, Georgetown. US insurance likely will not work in Grand Cayman, so be prepared to pay out of pocket and travel insurance is always a smart choice. 911 is the number to use in emergencies. 
• What if my toddler is scared of stingrays/water? I would only recommend Stingray City for older kids who are strong swimmers and wouldn’t be afraid of the stingrays. If kids are afraid of swimming in the Caribbean Sea, there are plenty of hotels and condos with pools that may be more familiar for new swimmers. 
• Are there mosquitoes? Should I bring bug protection? Yes, there can be mosquitoes at certain times of the year. They are usually most active early in the morning and in the evenings. I’d recommend bringing kid-safe bug spray to give a layer of protection. 
• How do I plan a Grand Cayman family vacation? Start by deciding when to visit, then book accommodations on Seven Mile Beach or in a family condo rental. Plan 5-7 days to enjoy beaches, visit Stingray City and explore top family attractions.
