Austin, Texas

My husband’s family lives outside of Austin, so we’re lucky to get to go there often! There are a ton of places in the Austin area to stay, and each one offers a very different experience.

The downtown area is filled with tons of great hotels, restaurants and live music. The Austin Hill Country area has stunning views, hiking trails and a great wine country for parents. And there are plenty of other suburban areas with great shopping, dining and kid-friendly activities.

When to visit Austin: I’d recommend any time other than the middle of summer when temperatures can get VERY hot!

Where to stay in Austin: Omni Barton Creek Resort and Spa (read my full review here!)

What to do with kids in Austin: From late March to early fall, it’s bat season in Austin. You can grab a seat near the Congress Avenue Bridge downtown and when the sun sets, watch them all fly out over Lady Bird Lake. It’s pretty spectacular!

Where to eat with kids in Austin: Get tacos (specifically breakfast tacos) at Veracruz All Natural. They have several locations throughout the Austin area.

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Nantucket was on my list of places to visit for so long and we finally got to go in 2025. I’m glad we waited until we had our son because it’s such a great place to travel with kids! The town has a very laid back vibe with tons of great beaches and playgrounds. There are so many great restaurants with all types of cuisine – everything from casual to fine dining. And it just has such a quaint and charming coastal New England vibe. It’s easy to reach by plane or ferry from major hubs like New York and Boston.

When to visit Nantucket: Definitely in the summer if you can afford it (it gets very expensive during the summer season). We visited in early June and it was great because the high season hadn’t quite begun so hotel prices were more affordable and it wasn’t too busy, but the tradeoff was that it was rainy and somewhat chilly.

Where to stay in Nantucket: The Nantucket Inn (read my full review here!)

What to do in Nantucket with kids: The Critter Cruise! It’s an hour long kids fishing charter where you get to check the lobster and crab traps out at sea (and then release them at the end), and kids get to fish off the boat. The captain and crew are incredibly helpful and try to make sure every kid catches a fish. The Whaling Museum and Maria Mitchell Association Aquarium are also fun, kid-friendly activities.

Where to eat in Nantucket with kids: There are tons of good family-friendly restaurants in Nantucket, so this is hard, but I’d say Provisions for a casual sandwich lunch.

travel with kids to grand cayman

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

Grand Cayman is one of those destinations that we go back to year after year. I’ve been going there since I was a baby, my husband and I got engaged and married there, and now we’re taking our son because it’s such a great destination for travel with kids.

Between the calm white sand beaches, great hotel options and so many restaurants, Grand Cayman is a great choice for families traveling to the Caribbean. Stay in the Seven Mile Beach area for the best hotel, dining and activity options.

When to visit Grand Cayman: Spring is the most popular time for tourists in Grand Cayman. That’s when we go, and when I’d recommend going. If you want a quieter stay, go in the fall. And if you don’t mind the risk of traveling during hurricane season, the summer is a great time to visit too. Basically, there isn’t a bad time to visit Grand Cayman if you ask me.

Where to stay in Grand Cayman with kids: Rent a condo so you have a kitchen and laundry. Our favorite is in the Harbour Heights complex. If you prefer a hotel, The Westin is our top pick.

What to do in Grand Cayman with kids: Visit the Cayman Turtle Centre, which is a wildlife conservation center in Grand Cayman. Your family can see and interact with various Caymanian wildlife, and they have a water slide! We also love catamaran charters from Red Sail Sports and strolling around Camana Bay.

Where to eat in Grand Cayman with kids: Peppers is a casual restaurant that specializes in jerk and seafood. They have a great kids menu and live music some nights. Read about more of my restaurant recommendations.

Savannah, Georgia

Before we visited, I had no idea just how family-friendly Savannah is! First of all, there are so many great activities for kids, including multiple children’s museums. Also, it’s an extremely walkable city, so no need for lugging around a car seat! And finally, there are a ton of great family-friendly restaurants all over the city. The perfect city for travel with kids!

When to visit Savannah: We visited in February and thought it was great! The weather was cool, but not cold so we could walk around with jackets. The summers get very hot so that time of year might not be as enjoyable for walking around.

Where to stay in Savannah with kids: The SpringHill Suites Savannah Downtown (read my full review!).

What to do in Savannah with kids: Visit two children’s museums, the Savannah Children’s Museum (outdoors!) and the Telfair Children’s Art Museum (for creative kiddos).

Where to eat in Savannah with kids: Our favorite restaurant was River House because it was right on the water so the kids could watch boats go by. And for parents, they had great cocktails and seafood options. See all of my kid-friendly Savannah restaurant recommendations.

travel with kids to Boston

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston is one of our favorite big cities in the US to travel with kids to. It’s clean, there’s so much history to explore, and it has SO MUCH to do. We could go back again and again and probably find new things to do each time.

When to visit Boston: It depends on what you’re wanting to do! Both times, we visited in October and loved it. It’s not too cold in the fall so you can still walk around, and it’s less busy than summer when there are more tourists. I do want to go in both summer and winter though to experience those seasons there as well!

Where to stay in Boston with kids: Either the Fairmont Copley Plaza or The Bostonian. Read about the differences between these hotels to help you choose which is best for your family!

What to do in Boston with kids: Visit the Boston Children’s Museum, which is three stories of interactive fun for all ages (they even have a special area for kids 0-3!). Here’s a list of all of our favorite kid-friendly activities.

Where to eat in Boston with kids: My top pick is Joe’s Waterfront. It’s right on Boston Harbor, so you can watch the boats and Christopher Columbus Park is right next door so kids can burn off energy before or after their meal. Read more about kid-friendly restaurants in Boston.
