Real tips from a toddler mom

The first time I traveled with my son, we took a week-long vacation to the Turks & Caicos islands. As a new mom traveling out of the country, I absolutely did not know how to pack light when traveling with a toddler.
We had diapers for a week, way too many “just in case” outfits, multiple toys, and so many snacks. And guess what? We didn’t use half of it.
After traveling with my toddler dozens of times, from quick weekend trips to longer vacations, I’ve learned that packing light when traveling with a toddler is not only possible, it actually makes the whole trip easier.
Less luggage means smoother airport days, easier hotel check ins, and far less time digging through suitcases looking for things.
If you’re wondering how to pack light when traveling with a toddler, there are the strategies that have made the biggest difference for us.
Why packing light matters when traveling with a toddler
Traveling with kids already comes with extra logistics. The last thing you want is to also be managing multiple heavy suitcases.
Packing lighter means:
- Easier airport security lines
- Less stress juggling bags and strollers
- Quicker hotel room organization
- Fewer things to keep track of
Most importantly, it lets you focus on actually enjoying the trip instead of managing your luggage.
And, the reality is many things parents pack “just in case” are rarely used. Many experienced family travelers recommend bringing only the essentials and purchasing basic items like diapers and snacks once you arrive at your destination.
My best tips for packing light with a toddler
These are the packing habits that helped us go from overpacking every trip to traveling much lighter.
Only pack diapers for the travel day
One of the biggest space savers is diapers.
Instead of packing diapers for the entire trip, I bring just enough for travel day and the first day or two.
Most destinations have grocery stores, pharmacies, or delivery options where you can easily buy more once you arrive.
This alone can free up a huge amount of space in your suitcase.
Limit toys to a few favorites
It’s tempting to bring lots of entertainment options, especially for flights.
But you have limited space, and toddlers usually gravitate toward the same two or three toys anyway (at least mine does!).
Now I pack:
- A sticker book
- One small toy
- A favorite stuffed animal
Small toys and books are easy to pack and take up less suitcase space.

Pack mix-and-match outfits
Instead of packing full outfits for every day, I pack items that I can mix and match (as long as they don’t get too dirty!). Stick to simple patterns and colors, which helps things match easier.
For example, for a 5-day trip, here’s what I’d bring:
- 4-5 tops
- 3 bottoms
- 2 pairs of PJs
- 1 lightweight jacket
Do laundry while you’re away if you can
If we’re staying in a rental home or condo, one of the top amenities I look for is if it has a washing machine. It’s great to be able to wash items mid-trip so you can bring less.
Some hotels offer laundry service (though normally for a fee), and we’ve even been known to buy a small travel-size laundry detergent and just wash a few items in the sink!
Buy snacks and toiletries at your destination
Snacks and toiletries can take up a surprising amount of suitcase space. Now, I usually bring just a small amount for travel day and then restock when we arrive. This works especially well in destinations where grocery stores are easy to access. And, it can be fun to explore local grocery stores, especially in different countries.
Assign packing cubes and a section of the suitcase to each family member
Not only do packing cubes help me stay organized when I’m packing, they also help tremendously with unpacking when we arrive. I use vacuum bags inside the packing cubes to maximize my space even more.Â
I also assign sections of the suitcase to each family member. This way, everyone’s stuff stays in one place. We usually travel with one medium-sized suitcase and one smaller one.Â
Bring must-have items in your carry-on
Most importantly, this includes items like medications, important documents, etc., And, I also always pack the basics that we’d need if luggage gets lost or delayed. For example, if we’re going on a beach vacation, we’ll bring a swim suit and at least one outfit. The last thing you want is to have to hunt down those items on your first day!
What I stopped packing after traveling with a toddler
Some of the biggest improvements in minimalist packing with kids come from simply realizing what we didn’t need.
Here are the things I used to pack but don’t anymore.
- Too many clothes: Toddlers are messy, but bringing more than you need “just in case” usually isn’t necessary.
- Bulky blankets: Most hotels and rentals have plenty; if your child has a special blanket, bring only if it’s light.
- Too many toys: Two or three usually work! And you’ll likely have fun activities planned for your trip anyways, decreasing the need for tons of toy playtime.
- Full packs of diapers: They take up tons of space and are easy to buy at your destination.
- Extra shoes: For most trips, your toddler can get away with one comfortable pair and sandals if you’re visiting a warm destination.
